The Peter Benoit Fund has been working for years to preserve the legacy of the founder of the Antwerp conservatory and give it the future it deserves. The importance of Peter Benoit for music in our country cannot be overstated. Among other things, he wrote very beautiful, too little known piano works. Pianist Jozef De Beenhouwer has been committed for decades to promoting this work worldwide.
As a board member of the Peter Benoit Fund, Jozef De Beenhouwer rightly had the honor of being the first to play in the restored Pleyel grand piano of Peter Benoit at the Museum Vleeshuis Klank van de Stad, in the presence of Antwerp's culture alderman Nabilla Ait Daoud and restorer Yannick Wynants of Atelier Herkenrode. The piano has been restored to its proper condition and that was necessary. For years, the necessary funds were raised, research was conducted and finally work could begin. Once again this grand piano will be able to sound as a fully-fledged concert instrument in the Vleeshuis in the heart of Antwerp. Given the coronavirus crisis, it will take some time before the general public can get acquainted with this instrument during concerts, but this temporary delay must not dampen the joy of recovering this piano.
