A Symphonic Tribute

In the lead-up to the world athletics championships in 2022 taking place in Eugene, Oregon, the Eugene Symphony commissioned David Schiff to compose a unique musical tribute to the legendary local runner Steve Prefontaine, one of the most important figures in American running. Inspired by his legacy, the symphony celebrates Prefontaine's life, athletics and activism while incorporating the landscapes and memories of his birthplace. From the drive to Coos Bay to his legendary high school years and iconic races, the work combines orchestral narratives with themes such as ambition and resilience. The program concludes with Andrea Reinkemeyer's Water Sings Fire, a dynamic orchestral work inspired by Leigh Bardugo's feminist origin myth exploring themes such as power, betrayal and transformation. Both works reflect the profound cultural significance of their themes and connect the music with the rich history and challenges they represent.
