When film composers turn to classical music, they shed a straitjacket rather than cast a safety net. In his Metamorfosi di Violetta, Ennio Morricone dissects the heroine's downfall from La Traviata with cinematic acuity. Tigran Mansurian's Agnus Dei oscillates between song and dissonance to evoke unprocessed grief. John Corigliano's Soliloquy turns even further inward and transforms private loss into silent radiance. Bernard Herrmann never aspired to classical abstraction, but Hitchcock's musical alter ego - the composer of the film music for Psycho and Vertigo - delivers the jewel of this programme: Souvenir du voyage, a nostalgic gem with a profound cinematic sensibility.
