The not yet 20-year-old Czech pianist Jan Schulmeister makes an excellent Supraphon debut with this recital of Russian music... all three composers are united here by Schulmeister's intense musicality. It is always good to hear Pictures at an Exhibition in the original piano version rather than an overdone orchestration, but Schulmeister makes Mussorgsky's suite sound even more subtle than usual... There is more musical intelligence in Rachmaninoff's Six Moments Musicaux... Many pianists would stop here, but Schulmeister offers a thoughtful encore (Scriabin's Etude, Op. 2 no. 1) to make this feel like a true recital.
