Cellosuiten BWV 1007 & 1008

Franco-American cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton has always sought to make music a language open to the world. The musician, who won the Rostropovitsj Competition at age 25, is the favorite interpreter of many contemporary composers, including Pascal Dusapin and Wolfgang Rihm, and has worked with actresses such as Fanny Ardant and Charlotte Rampling and filmmaker Chantal Akerman. Sonia Wieder-Atherton's collaboration with Alpha Classics comprises three recordings of Bach's cello suites, beginning with this recording of Suites Nos. 1 and 2, which is released together with the next two recordings (Suites 3 to 6) with photographs by the great Sarah Moon: "When I play Bach's suites, at some point I always see before me the image of Giacometti's hands, tirelessly kneading sounds until a face emerges. (...) Playing the Bach suites is an experience that comes very close to that. It is about digging into the strings until the phrase is born and finding the right way to breathe that phrase. (...) And then came the meeting with Sarah Moon. When my desire was born to record the Bach suites, I dreamed of her photographs. Because when I look at them, I imagine the creation of the world, the separation of the waters, the appearance of the earth, before the beginning of time."
