Ferdinand Thieriot, born in Hamburg (1838-1919), not only had the same teacher as Brahms - namely Eduard Marxsen - but both composers, who remained friends in later years, employed a similar musical language rich in melodies and effortlessly contrapuntal. The musicologist Wilhelm Altmann wrote: "Thieriot's chamber music is invariably noble and pure. He composes with a perfect mastery of form and expression" - as the works on this fourth album with première recordings of his works demonstrate, characterized by an exquisite balance of depth and beauty, Brahmsian richness and Schubertian spontaneity.
