These Christmas carols from the Alps dispense with the stylization customary in "high" art. The predominant Latin-German linguistic mixture in the midnight Christmas liturgy with alternating voices of priests and laity was replaced by the familiar local dialect. The texts and melodies were transmitted orally and underwent many changes as they traveled through the Alpine valleys. At their core, they are one of the most important sources for what we today know as "German Christmas music".
