A meeting between violinist David Haroutunian and Karen Khachaturian, the son of legendary composer Aram Khachaturian, provided the inspiration for this new recording. Following their encounter in Paris during a concert commemorating the 40th anniversary of Aram Khachaturian's death, Karen entrusted the violinist with the score of an unpublished violin sonata that his father had written in the early 1930s. With its avant-gardiste style and division into two unique parts, it is a remarkable masterpiece that is both profound and accessible. "Through my discovery of this sonata, I wanted to record all of Khachaturian's violin works, because to my knowledge, there is no comprehensive recording," David explains. Together with pianist Xenia Maliarevitch, he began recording not only Khachaturian's original compositions for solo violin and duos for violin and piano, but also selected arrangements of his most well-known works, including fragments from Gayaneh and the Sabre Dance in an arrangement by Jascha Heifetz. This album also includes a previously unrecorded dance from 1925 that contributes to the rich legacy of Khachaturian's music.
