Des Heilands letzte Stunden

It is a discovery: Louis Spohr's passion oratorio Des Heilands letzte Stunden is virtually unknown today. Under the influence of a performance of Bach's Matthäus Passion, Spohr wrote his Passion in 1834, in which he describes the events from an unusual perspective: The disciple John takes on the role of the narrator who is directly involved in the events. Together with Mary, the mother of Jesus, he describes the passion narrative. Particularly remarkable are the scenes before the high court of Caiaphas and before the cross with the musically painted earthquake. This great passion oratorio is a jewel of early 19th-century sacred choral music, which Frieder Bernius makes accessible to us again with his Stuttgart Kamerkoor and the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen. The seven soloists are excellent: Johanna Winkel, Maximilian Vogler, Florian Sievers, Arttu Kataja, Thomas E. Bauer as well as Felix Rathgeber and Magnus Piontek.
