The delightfully erotic aspects of the text from the Song of Solomon inspired countless composers in the 17th century; even the strictest Lutheran composers could not resist setting the text to music. Most of Hammerschmidt's pieces on this text are written for soprano or tenor voices; these naturally represent the two protagonists, the lover and the beloved. The programme is built around these works and creates an entertainment - a small sacred opera - in which evocations of love and sensual dialogues are framed by dances and instrumental pieces. The programme features works by Andreas Hammerschmidt, Johann Vierdanck, Dieterich Buxtehude, Thomas Strutz and others.
