In the original
Elijah is one of Mendelssohn's best-known works in Germany, but few people realise that it was not composed in German, but was written in 1845 as a contribution to the Birmingham Triennial Music Festival and only two years later was performed in a German translation in Berlin. The work, which is also enormously popular in the English-speaking world, was selected by the London Symphony Orchestra's own label LSOlive in its original English version to celebrate the 25th anniversary, with none other than the British baritone Gerald Finley in the title role.
