Edward Elgar's Cello Concerto in E is a milestone in the cello repertoire and was composed in 1919 during the composer's summer vacation in England. This masterwork of moods ranges from world-weariness and melancholy to liveliness and passion. Two other cello works written around the same time were decisive for the careers of their composers. John Ireland's Cello Sonata in G minor combines brooding, compelling power with lyricism and bravura, while Frank Bridge's two-part Cello Sonata in D minor combines pre-war romanticism with war melancholy and rebellion.
