Freedom is a dominant theme in the English oratorios of George Frideric Händel. These magnificent works are usually based on biblical stories about resistance, oppression, captivity and ultimately freedom. His oeuvre contains impressive slave choruses and many arias about (un)freedom, of which eight are presented on this album. As a versatile singer of early music, countertenor Oscar Veraar has performed major works by composers such as Bach and Händel alongside less well-known music from the Middle Ages to the 18th century. His interest in performance practice has also led him to conduct much of the musicological research required for these works. For this recording, he has had the invaluable support of an experienced orchestra such as La Sfera Armoniosa under the direction of Mike Fentross.
