In the musical world of the Berlin court in the mid-18th century, Christoph Schaffrath occupied a remarkable position. As a highly valued keyboard player, he initially worked in the circle of the court of Frederik de Grote and later served for many years as harpsichordist in the service of princess Anna Amalia, the music-loving sister of the king. The music of Schaffrath is exemplary of the stylistic transition phase of the mid-18th century: it combines the structural clarity and contrapuntal discipline of the late Baroque with the melodic elegance and emotional expressivity of the sentimental style. In this recording, Polish harpsichordist Anna Firlus together with the ensemble {oh} Orkiestra Historyczna performing on historical instruments under the direction of Martyna Pastuszka present a lively interpretation of these rarely heard works and make the elegance and expressive versatility of Schaffrath's concerto style impressively tangible.
