J. S. Bach’s Six Suites for Violoncello on the Viola

The Six Suites for solo cello by Johann Sebastian Bach belong to the central works of Western music. There is scarcely another cycle that combines technical mastery, architectural clarity and spiritual depth in a comparable way. For centuries they were regarded as a touchstone for cellists - today they belong to the world's best-known solo repertoire. Viola player Marc Sabbah now undertakes a change of perspective with his recording: he transposes the six suites to the viola da gamba and thus opens a new, surprisingly organic approach to this cosmos.
