Johannes-Passion

Johann Sebastian Bach's Johannes Passion premiered twice: Bach wished to perform it in the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, but that was unavailable in 1724, so a thoroughly revised second version could only take place the following year at the desired location. Exactly 300 years later, MDG releases the highly praised recording of this performance conducted by Peter Neumann for the first time as an SACD in the "Preziosa" series - in the legendary three-dimensional 2+2+2 sound.

This is important, because through the changes the aspects of 'guilt' and 'sin' are more strongly emphasized, causing the theological message of the work to point in a slightly different direction. What is truly remarkable about this recording is the use of a large church organ as a continuo instrument, giving the arias and chorales a very special coloring.
