In times when music only existed as it was performed live - thus before the invention of sound carriers, radio or streaming - it only became popular through as many performances as possible. The independence of composers from aristocratic patrons, the interest of the growing middle class in domestic music and the resulting flourishing of music publishing houses led in the 19th century to countless arrangements of large works for smaller ensembles. If these came from celebrated virtuosos who also maintained close contact with the composers - such as Moscheles with Beethoven - the success of the second realization was almost guaranteed.
