Fullness of Sound
Paolo Pandolfo presents here the complete solo pieces for lyra viola in Alfonso Ferrabosco's print from 1609 Lessons for 1st 2nd and 3rd Viols. The lyra viol is a special type of viol in which resonating strings are attached beneath the normal strings, creating a fascinating fullness of sound that often seems to be produced by more than one instrument. The playing is highly virtuosic because the player must use special bowing techniques to simulate polyphonic works written for a viol consort.
