Masses, Canticles, Motets

After his first album for Linn - a recording of motets by English expatriates Philips and Dering - the choir of Gonville & Caius College, Cambridge, travels a couple of centuries forward and now focuses on the vibrant and engaging choral music of its music director Matthew Martin. The album contains a collection of works composed between 2004 and 2022, including several world premieres. From simple mass settings and motets to more complex festival anthems and cantilenas, the music is largely and unapologetically composed as an extension of a familiar 20th-century English idiom, its varied style crossing both Anglican and Catholic traditions with echoes of lesser-known European chants and polyphony. This is music that choirs will heartily embrace in their repertoire.
