Thanos Mitsalas and the Thessaloniki State Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Miltos Logiadis, present two works for guitar and symphony orchestra by Sergio Assad, both recorded for the first time: his Naoussa Concerto and the Concerto do Rio. Both sketch a compelling picture of contrasting cultural environments through their descriptive titles of movements and sections: one in an urban Brazilian setting, the other in a rural Greek setting. The Naoussa Concerto was composed to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the massacre that was carried out in 1822 during the Greek War of Independence in the northern Greek city of Naoussa.
