"Viatore" – In the footsteps of home, nature and spirituality. Iveta Apkalna's new album is released on 13 February 2026 on Berlin Classics and is her fifth recording for this label. It is her most personal project to date: a musical encounter with the spirits that reflect her art and the history of her homeland. Central to the album is the music of Pēteris Vasks, with whom Apkalna shares a deep artistic and personal bond. Shaped by the experiences of the 'Singing Revolution', the programme reflects a longing for freedom, truth and cultural identity. Vasks' Te Deum, composed as an expression of gratitude for Latvia's regained independence, combines spiritual depth with elements of Latvian folk music. Another milestone is Viatore, the work that played a decisive role in Apkalna's career and now returns in a more mature, more contemplative interpretation. The programme is supplemented with works by Arvo Pärt, whose restrained, meditative style represents for Apkalna a process of inner transformation and spiritual quest. The album, deliberately recorded in a concert hall rather than a sacred space, focuses on clarity, silence and the inner resonance of the music – thus creating a space for remembrance, prayer and connection.
