"An entirely new sonic world opened up for me. I had never heard such old music before: so colorful, so immediately moving," says violist Martin Stegner about his first experience with Monteverdi together with Wu Wei, the master of the sheng, the traditional Chinese mouth organ. The variety of sounds Wei can elicit from his instrument is remarkable, as is the tonal blending of sheng, viola da gamba and double bass in this Chinese-German-Finnish trio. Bassist Janne Saksala, who like Stegner is a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, shares the improvisational joy of the violist.
On this recording, the trio plays Claude Monteverdi's Si dolce è'l tormento and Pur ti miro from L'incoronazione di Poppea, J. S. Bach's Organ Trio Sonatas Nos. 1 and 4 and Antonio Vivaldi's Trio Sonata in D minor, supplemented with a Norwegian folk tune. The musicians "explore the freedom that music offers. With respect, but also with the joy of discovery".
