With Rosary Sonatas – Mysteries of Life, violinist Madoka Nakamaru and organist Wouter Dekoninck bring the meditative mysteries surrounding the life of the Catholic rosary prayer into dialogue with Protestant sounds. They open (alpha) with Buxtehude's Passacaglia – Dekoninck sets the organ in purifying glow – and then lead through nine finely balanced works: per cycle one Rosenkranz-Sonata by Biber, alternating with music by Bach, Buxtehude or an anonymous contemporary. Catholic and Protestant alternate with each other, just as organ and violin, solo or in dialogue. The CD ends (omega) with Biber's violin Passacaglia, performed by Nakamaru in a hushed and intense play that touches deeply.
Published by Etcetera in a cardboard sleeve with a beautifully designed booklet, full of commentary and atmospheric images "that you won't find on Spotify", this recording proves that music can heal old fault lines and invites the listener to contemplation.
