Sacrae Cantiones

For more than a quarter of a century, printed music in Munich was primarily focused on one person: court conductor Orlando di Lasso. It was not until around 1585 that the printed repertoire began to diversify. The Sacrae cantiones by Tyrolean Franciscan priest Blasius Amon also fall within this phase. After a few years as a choirboy in the court chapel of Innsbruck, Amon stayed in Venice between approximately 1582 and 1585. There the young musician and candidate for priesthood came into contact with the music of Andrea and Giovanni Gabrieli. Only five years later, shortly after the Sacrae cantiones were published in Munich, Amon died at the age of 30. The vocal soloist ensemble Cantus München under the direction of Gerhard Hölzle and Marcus Schmidl devotes itself with great dedication and tonal precision to Amon's 30 polychoral motets in the Venetian manner.
