Inspired by the innovations of Cavaillé-Coll, the builder of the "symphonic" organ, Charles-Marie Widor created music that combined Bach's legacy with the expression of Romanticism. The three symphonies nos. 5, 6 and 7 are not only technically brilliant, but also a poetic exploration of timbre, power and architectonic form. From the iconic Toccata to Wagnerian echoes and cyclical forms, the music pulses with drama and beauty. One can understand the excitement Widor felt when standing at his beloved organ in St Sulpice, which inspired him to create these cathedrals of sound.
