Santtu conducts Shostakovich

This is the fourth production of the Philharmonia Orchestra and its chief conductor Santtu-Matias Rouvali for SIGNUM CLASSICS. Two particularly subversive and sardonic symphonies by Dmitri Shostakovich are featured: the three-part 6th Symphony (1939) with its long, dark opening movement, followed by two scherzo-like fast movements, and his 9th Symphony (1945), in which the composer, against expectations, rejects any pathos or bombast of a ninth symphony and which is sometimes referred to as the "Ninth Symphony that didn't want to be a symphony".
