The violist Hyeyoon Park, winner of the ARD International Music Competition 2009, has made a name for herself as a soloist and chamber musician and has performed with the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the NHK Symphony Orchestra, Kian Soltani, Timothy Ridout and Benjamin Grosvenor.
"Silenced", her first album for Linn, which she recorded with Gergely Madaras and the WDR Symfonieorkest, explores the works of two composers who were critical of the regime. Shostakovich's First Violin Concerto was banned because of "formalistic distortions" and did not premiere until 1955, after Stalin's death. The concert piece by Dutch composer Henriette Bosmans, who refused to become a member of the National Socialist Kultuurkamer, is introspective and bitter in tone. It was composed in a state of mourning over the ban on her music. Shostakovich's Variations Op. 3, a youthful academic exercise, closes the album with a rousing finale.
