Although the three composers on this recording do not belong to the most important representatives of Viennese music in the first half of the 20th century in public perception and sometimes even in the perception of the performers themselves, their remarkably expressive and virtuosic work is deeply rooted in the Vienna of the fin-de-siècle. They were banned by the dictatorships of the 1930s and blacklisted by the young European avant-garde after the Second World War, and only in recent years have the beauty and richness of their works been rediscovered.

Vienna-born conductor Sascha Goetzel writes about the works performed here with the Orchestre National des Pays de la Loire: "With Korngold, Schreker and Krenek we are not only listening to music - we engage in a dialogue between past and present, tradition and rebellion, myth and modernity [...] Korngold embodies the emotional sincerity and creative ambition of the late-Romantic tradition. Schreker dives into the unconscious - mythical, elusive and rich in emotion. Krenek breaks through the façade by introducing irony, jazz and fragmentation into orchestral form [...] Each composer pushes against traditional conventions in his own way to discover new tonal languages."
