In a century in which many illustrious French and German composers wrote for two flutes, the six sonatas of Wilhelm Friedemann Bach stand out as the most significant, complex and technically demanding works in this repertoire. Since they were rediscovered and published nearly a century ago, they have become a permanent part of the flute catalogue and are appreciated and performed on both historical and modern instruments. The specialist Peter Wollny considers it to be the work from Friedemann's creative oeuvre and even as a summary of his entire production, full of references to and reminiscences of his earlier works. After the album devoted to the sonatas of CPE Bach (A537, Diapason d'or), Manuel Granatiero, accompanied by Italian-Croatian flautist Eleonora Bišćević, now turns to this masterwork of Johann Sebastian Bach's eldest son. Some thirty-five years after the first and only recorded version on historical instruments (by Barthold Kuijken and Marc Hantaï) this new recording offers a fresh perspective on music of extraordinary brilliance, passion and virtuosity.
