Sonatas with Varied Reprises

Tom Beghin's project was inspired by a historical event: in 1775 Leopold Mozart attempted unsuccessfully to have the six "Munich Sonatas" (K. 279-284) by his son published by Breitkopf - following the example of the "Sonatas with Modified Reprises" by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach. The idea of how these works might have sounded with written-out variations in the repeats forms the core of the recording. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart lived in a time when musicians had to and would improvise - that is very different today. While Tom Beghin on the one hand proceeded very methodically, a creative process began that led to increasingly more improvisations, which were ultimately notated as scores. The result is a "reconstructed" edition of the "Six Sonatas with Modified Reprises". The result combines historical awareness with a lively, contemporary joy of playing.
