The Child God

For her second Tzadik recording, Bun-Ching Lam has assembled some of the greatest traditional music performers of China and matched them with some of New York’s most creative instrumentalists in creating a beautiful and lyrical meeting of western art music and Chinese troubadour traditions. Her mini-opera, The Child God was originally written as a shadow-play. It incorporates spoken narration, instrumental music and tenor songs. Based on a Ming Dynasty mystical novel The Creation of the Gods, it tells the story of No Cha, from his miraculous birth, to the discovery of his own supernatural powers. Adventurous, charming and delightful. Bun-Ching Lam was born in Macao, China, and holds a Ph.D in composition from the University of California at San Diego. She is the recipient of numerous grants and fellowships including most recently the treasured Rome Prize for Composition.
