Horror opera and human drama
Lyric Opera of Kansas City presents the world premiere recording of Paul Moravec and Mark Campbell's opera The Shining (2016). The opera, based on Stephen King's novel, "elevates the story of a horror tale into human drama" (Wall Street Journal), thanks to Moravec's atmospheric, electrifying score and Campbell's skillful libretto. While the staged productions have been highly praised by critics and audiences, this gripping masterpiece can now be heard as a recording for the first time. The Kansas City Symphony Orchestra and the Lyric Opera of Kansas City Chorus are led by the outstanding conductor Gerard Schwarz and collaborate with an excellent cast of soloists. The title role of Jack Torrance is performed by Edward Parks, who was already involved in the Grammy-winning recording of Mason Bates The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs (jpc 8259279), which was released by Pentatone in 2018.
