Three Trios for Flute

Three trios for the unusual combination of flute, clarinet and viola were published around the turn of the 19th century under the name Montelli. Various editions indicate that they enjoyed considerable reputation in their time. Their structure is late classical: first movements with a wide range that distribute the main themes across all three instruments; concise central slow movements with a cantabile profile; and finales in lively rondo forms. The name Montelli remains mysterious. It is only associated with another collection of three piano sonatas that Lemoine published around 1811 in Paris, with the letter "J" as a first name.
