"Genuinely phenomenal" (Fanfare) - British-American clarinetist Jean Johnson makes her debut at Linn with her husband, pianist Steven Osborne. Jean is a passionate chamber musician who has performed in some of the world's most prestigious concert halls and has compiled a programme of beautiful Romantic works. Although Brahms is not represented in this recital, he connects all four works together. Gustav Jenner was his only long-term student; the stylistic influence of his teacher is felt in Jenner's Clarinet Sonata, an ambitious work that brings out the natural lyricism of the instrument. Robert and Clara Schumann were friends and mentors of Brahms, and Jean has arranged their Romances. Weber appropriately closes the programme - Brahms postponed his retirement after hearing his Clarinet Concerto - with the Grand Duo Concertant.
