Dance Heritage as a Breeding Ground for Endless Creative Play From the triangular relationship between Brussel, Gent and Antwerpen emerges in the 1980s a generation of radical dance innovators. Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker, Wim Vandekeybus, Marc Vanrunxt, Alain Platel, Jan Fabre and many others gradually infiltrate Belgian theatres with their unconventional productions. In no time, they also sweep through the Netherlands, Europe and the rest of the world. That 'Vlaamse Golf' has profoundly influenced how we watch and dance, it now appears, some forty years later. In A Wave, choreographer Zoë Demoustier takes stock. With around fifteen dancers – from Opera Ballet Vlaanderen, supplemented by young dancers, a dancer from Platform K and iconic dancers who created the pieces of yesteryear – she deconstructs monumental scenes from the 1980s and 1990s with an eye to the future. Together they explore what needs to be passed on and what could use an update. But above all: how references can be not a straitjacket but a source for dance pleasure and – who knows – a new wave.
