In Nimble, Alexander Vantournhout explores with nine dancers from Not Standing the dynamics of a group in motion. Inspired by the footwork of boxers, a rhythmic choreography emerges about balance, energy and collective pulse. Total stillness? An alluring, but unattainable desire, choreographer Alexander Vantournhout teaches with Nimble. In this new, large-scale creation, nine dancers from his company Not Standing share the stage - for the first time in the main hall. Sometimes they merge into one disciplined swarm, then the formation drifts apart again into separate atoms. Like an internal symphony, their physical rhythms determine the choreographic cadence. Vantournhout developed a pronounced movement language at the intersection of dance, martial arts, circus, yoga and anatomy. His work starts from an in-depth exploration of the physical and kinetic potential of the body and the relationship between body and object. In Nimble, that focus shifts to the group and the space, without letting go of the tension and risk that characterise his work. Inspired by the rhythmic footwork of boxers, the movement language focuses on the lower body. Light-footed jumps, powerful rotations and hurried shuffling show how boxing and dance share surprisingly much with each other. Thus Nimble seeks a balance between unison and disharmony, between individual rhythms and a shared pulse.
