GHOST by Asa Horvitz is a concert about grief, memory and AI. With Carmen Quill, Ariadne Randall and Wayne Horvitz, a layered performance emerges for voice, piano, electronics and viola da gamba, based on texts about loss and memory. GHOST is a concert about memory, grief and the lingering presence of the past. After the death of his father, composer Asa Horvitz collected 151 books about death, grief, archives and memory. Together with computational linguist Seraphina Goldfarb-Tarrant and theorist Alejandro Calcaño, he trained a small, deliberately 'flawed' AI on these texts. This generates fragmentary, repetitive and poetic language that evokes how memories and sorrow present themselves. These texts became the basis for a series of songs that Horvitz performs with singer and bassist Carmen Quill, performer Ariadne Randall and pianist Wayne Horvitz. The result is a concert for voice, piano, electronics and viola da gamba, in which voices move between speaking and singing and music and language repeat in fragments of memory. Originally a multimedia work, GHOST is presented during Dear Antwerp as a concert without scenography.
