BITOI – Soul-Cleansing Performance

A Scandinavian ensemble around bass and voices creates a minimalist yet powerful sonic landscape. Close vocal harmonies, polyrhythms and pulsating bass lines form an archaic yet surprisingly fresh sound. BITOI (Bass Is The Original Instrument) is a Swedish-Danish formation around bass and voices, founded by acclaimed composer and bassist Cassius Lambert, together with singers Alexandra Shabo, Ella Cronberg and Lydia Cronberg. With minimal means, BITOI creates a rich and sharply defined sonic landscape. The female trio combines raw power with refined textures: close harmonies and dissonances move above deep, pulsating bass lines. Their texts, based on phonetically notated birdsong, grow into songs that sound both archaic and surprisingly fresh. The ensemble embodies Lambert's idea of 'miximalism': extracting maximum sound from minimal means - bass, voices, polyrhythms and subtly processed textures.
