David Murray / Kahil El Zabar – 40 years of musical friendship

Two icons of spiritual jazz meet in an intense duet of saxophone and percussion. Decades of shared musical experience and free improvisation come together in a powerful live encounter. Kahil El'Zabar and David Murray have shared a deep musical bond for more than 40 years. When they met each other in 1975 in Chicago, there was immediately 'a real good vibration', as El'Zabar later recalled. Since then, these two key figures in jazz have regularly worked together and brought their music to stages around the world. Percussionist and bandleader Kahil El'Zabar worked with greats such as Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Pharoah Sanders, Nina Simone, Stevie Wonder, Donny Hathaway, Paul Simon and Neneh Cherry. Tenor saxophonist David Murray is regarded as one of the most influential players of his generation and recorded more than three hundred projects. He worked, among others, with Max Roach, Charles Mingus, Cecil Taylor, Jack DeJohnette, Chico Hamilton, Elvin Jones, Archie Shepp, Pharoah Sanders and Randy Weston. Together, Murray and El'Zabar bring an intense interplay in which spiritual jazz, improvisation and decades of shared musical experience come together.
