Inventive and virtuosic About Magnus Lindberg's Third Piano Concerto (2022), the Wall Street Journal wrote: 'A work that evokes the grandeur of others, while at the same time creating its own unique sound world.' In his lively, inventive and virtuosic solo concerto, Ravel, Prokofiev and Rachmaninoff look over Lindberg's shoulder, but they let him go his own way… With two Scandinavian orchestras, the NTR ZaterdagMatinee has commissioned this Finnish composer. Lindberg, himself a pianist, writes a concerto for two pianos and orchestra for Lucas and Arthur Jussen. They have the honour of premiering this double concerto three times: in Norway, Finland and the Netherlands! Snake and bird Lindberg's concerto is flanked by works in which an animal is central. Silvestre Revueltas depicts in Sensemayá the ritual slaughter of a snake. The continuous pulse, the irregular rhythms and the ceremonial and ritual character evoke associations with Stravinsky's Sacre. From Stravinsky comes the ballet The Firebird, which had its premiere in 1910, three years before the Sacre, at the Ballets Russes in Paris. Usually the suite from this ballet sounds, but today the complete and original version will be heard!
