Dorian Wood – Xavela Lux Aeterna (The Voice of Chavela Vargas)

Xavela Lux Aeterna is a powerful tribute to the legendary Mexican-Costa Rican singer Chavela Vargas, created and performed by vocalist and composer Dorian Wood. The production follows a ritual journey through grief, love, resistance and liberation and celebrates the indomitable spirit and raw emotional power of Vargas' music. Together with a string quartet, guitar and electronics, Wood reinterprets Chavela's repertoire and connects traditional ranchera and bolero with contemporary sound worlds and theatrical elements. This creates an intense musical space where personal and cultural expression come together. Themes such as identity, rebellion and queerness - so characteristic of Chavela's life - take on new resonance here. The title means 'Xavela, eternal light' and refers to the lasting influence of Vargas on generations of listeners. With this production, Dorian Wood lets that light flare up again in a musical ceremony that connects past and present.
