On the day of their engagement, Vendulka refuses Lukaš to kiss her, out of respect for his deceased wife. Offended, he mocks his fiancée beneath her window, on the arm of the young women of the village. She too feels hurt and packs her suitcases, while Lukaš realizes too late and with bitterness what mistake he has made.
