On the day of their engagement, Vendulka refuses to kiss Lukaš, out of respect for his deceased wife. Wounded, he mocks his fiancée under her window, on the arm of the young women of the village. She too feels hurt and packs her suitcase, while Lukaš realizes too late and with bitterness what a mistake he has made.
