Mahler 4 In his monumental Fourth Symphony, Mahler connects simple life, the beauty of nature and rural life with the perfection of heaven. He does not shy away from themes such as death and transience – the second movement is a danse macabre with Death as a dancing violinist – but the existential anxiety that seems to dominate much of Mahler's symphonies is here much more in the background. In the finale the soprano sings of Heavenly joy: 'Wir genießen die himmlischen Freuden'. Karina Canellakis The American Karina Canellakis, chief conductor of the Radio Filharmonisch Orkest, is devoted to Mahler. The Guardian wrote lyrically: 'Her sublimely executed interpretation of Mahler's First Symphony, with every detail razor-sharp and the dynamic range as broad as possible, confirmed her command of large-scale musical structures, everything, whether expressive or vulgar, seemed to fall precisely in the right place.' Soprano Julia Kleiter sang the soprano solos in Mahler's Fourth with the Concertgebouworkest under the direction of Daniele Gatti at our Great Hall ten years ago. The live recording that was released from it was universally acclaimed and Kleiter received much praise for it.
