Nicole Mitchell / George Lewis – Sailing through the Inner Universe / P.Multitudinis

Muziek
An evening with music and conversation around two key figures in contemporary improvisation. New performances and live improvisation explore the meeting between composition, collective interaction and experimental sound. Two influential composers and improvisers meet in an evening with music and conversation. George E. Lewis and Nicole Mitchell are among the most important voices in contemporary experimental and improvised music. Students from the conservatories of Antwerpen, Brussel and Gent perform Lewis' visionary work P. Multitudinis (2018). In this creative orchestra, different musical traditions, playing practices and listening attitudes come together. The score consists of precisely notated material and a flexible framework of tasks, allowing the music to develop as it is played. Lewis therefore speaks of situational form: each performance emerges from the interaction between the musicians and the sonic environment. In Sailing through the Inner Universe, flutist and composer Nicole Mitchell takes the audience on a musical journey in which composition and improvisation meet. With complex melodies and inquisitive improvisations, she explores the boundary between our visible reality and an inner universe of sound. The evening opens with an artist talk with both composers.
