The great masters in this program show how it can be different: they respect tradition, but at the same time engage in a lively dialogue with it. At the start of the international Beethoven year, the composer who built the bridge between classicism and romanticism cannot be missing. His Piano Concerto no. 4 was daring at its premiere: instead of an orchestral opening, the work begins with a soft piano solo - a remarkable choice at that time. Schumann too starts from tradition. In his Rhenish Symphony he embraces the classical symphonic model, inspired by the Rhineland and German Romanticism. At the same time, he makes that model his own: monumental, personal, warm and innovative. Past and imagination reinforce each other.
