Castelnuovo-Tedesco componeerde zijn kamermuziek zowel vroeg als laat in zijn carrière. Hij beschouwde het Pianokwintet nr. 1 in F majeur uit 1932 als het beste van al zijn kamermuziekwerken uit die periode. Het ademt romantische openhartigheid en contrapuntische rijkdom, vol levendige thema's en met een kleurrijke sfeer. Het prachtige Pianokwintet nr. 2 , gecomponeerd in 1951, is gebaseerd op de herinneringen van de componist aan een sereen en landelijk Toscane.
