How did Mozart hear his own music at home in Salzburg? This recording provides the answer, for he made it not only in the house where he lived, but also with the clavichord with which he composed Die Zauberflöte, La Clemenza di Tito and the Requiem. Although the keyboard had the same range of five octaves as the fortepianos Mozart used for concerts, the weaker sound of the clavichord confined it to domestic use, where family members or colleagues who happened to be present could hear him. Baritone Georg Nigl and early keyboard specialist Alexander Gergelyfi have compiled an intimate programme with arias, overtures, cantatas, songs, fantasias, rondos and even the moving Lacrimosa from the Requiem. This unique album invites us into Mozart's own house in Salzburg, where we can sit beside an instrument he himself played and listen to two exceptional performers, both irrevocably charmed by the genius loci.
