SONGS OF PASSION

Lea Desandre, Thomas Dunford

British love songs by Lea Desandre and Thomas Dunford The British are known for their black humour, but not so much for their passion. Yet with their album Songs of Passion, mezzo-soprano Lea Desandre and lutenist Thomas Dunford dedicate themselves precisely to this rarely acknowledged aspect. There is, after all, John Dowland, who made a furore at the court of Elizabeth I with his enchanting songs. Dowland's melancholic lute songs are now combined on the new album of the old music dream team with the versatile pieces of Henry Purcell. Purcell was born about 100 years after Dowland and is by far the most famous Baroque composer of the island. Six pieces from his opera Dido and Aeneas appear on the album Songs of Passion, including Dido's moving lament When I am laid in earth. Songs of Passion is the fourth album that Lea Desandre (winner of the Prix de la Critique 2024 and Opus Klassik 2022) has released with Thomas Dunford on Erato. It thematically connects to Eternal Heaven and Idylle, with which the duo explored love and passion in works by Händel and French composers. As before, Dunford's Ensemble Jupiter is among the collaborators, as well as four renowned guest singers: alto Jess Dandy, tenor Laurence Kilsby, baritone Huw Montague Rendall and bass Alex Rosen.
